Simple Ways to Improve as a Speaker

Public speaking skills are key assets for any professional. They’re also focal points of the Freedom Events training approach, for new hires and seasoned performers. Here are some of the simplest and most effective strategies we’ve discovered for improving as a presenter:

  • Research Your Audience: You need to know as much as possible about your audience members’ needs and interests before you deliver a speech. We do our best to home in on what our listeners want to hear as we plan our Freedom Events presentations, because we want them to retain our messages.
  • Use Eye Contact to Your Advantage: It’s important to make eye contact with members of the audience to make them feel involved. One strategy we use is to identify the people who are paying closest attention to our remarks. We then revisit those listeners with eye contact throughout our speeches to keep ourselves engaged.
  • Set the Pace: There’s no reason to rush through your presentation, so allow yourself to take pauses when necessary. Along with giving the audience a chance to register what you’ve said, this will also help you collect your thoughts. This is a key element of making every major point as memorable as it can be, because you’ll maintain a steady pace throughout.

These techniques help us make speeches that stick with audience members. Like Freedom Events on Facebook for more on how we’re working to improve our speaking proficiency.
